Additional information

The Presidium of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences established the prize named after Academician V.I. Ilyichev. It is awarded for studies in the field of oceanology, hydrophysics and ocean acoustics.

Research highlights

Headed by V.I. Ilyichev, the Sukhumi Marine Research Station was transformed into a large scientific subdivision to conduct fundamental and applied research in the field of hydroacoustics and hydrophysics for purposes of USSR defense (1955-1974).

In 1974, V.I. Ilyichev became the head of the Pacific Oceanological Institute in Vladivostok. He had been the director for 20 years. During this period, hydroacoustical department with strong scientific potential was created, comprehensive studies of the ocean were conducted, and active cooperation with the Soviet Navy took place. The Institute became a multidisciplinary scientific institution with modern scientific laboratories and scientists able to solve complex problems of the study and exploration of the ocean resources.

Key publications

V. I. Ilyichev is an author of 300 research papers including several books receiving global recongnition: “Vector-world methods in acoustics” (1989), “Ocean's light background” (1990), “High-temperature superconductivity of ceramic systems” (1992), “Statistical theory for detection of hydroacoustics signals“ (1992). The research resulted in registering invention certificates in hydroacoustics, hydrophysics and oceanology.
