  • Photo Contest and exhibition “Millimages des récifs”
    13.06.2022 - 16.10.2022
The photo competition "Millimages des récifs" aims to refine the view of underwater photographers, amateur or professional, on the ecosystem they photograph. By imposing a theme each year to its contest, the Institut des Récifs Coralliens du Pacifique (IRCP) wishes that the participants have a naturalist look on their subject, more refined to the understanding of the observed phenomena.
The exhibitions that result from the contest have the function of sharing what has been observed, notably with the explanation of the organisms, behaviors or events photographed. IRCP is committed to helping break down barriers to diversity and equity. Its actions try as much as possible to give a place to as many people as possible in the exchanges and debates around environmental issues. Accessible to schools, associations, companies, everyone can learn more about the coral ecosystem, an ecosystem that is essential for French Polynesia.

  • 2022 International Year of the Salmon Pan-Pacific Winter High Seas Expedition
    1 January 2022 18:00 - 31 December 2022 18:00 NZDT (владивостокское время: 1 января 2022, 15:00 - 31 декабря 2022, 15:00)
The NPAFC and PICES are convening a consortium of intergovernmental organizations, NGOs, academic, Indigenous, and private sector partners to design, test, and implement a collaborative international ocean intelligence system to rapidly assess the impact of a changing ocean on coastal socio-ecological systems using salmon as an exemplar. This intelligence system will utilize partnerships, innovative monitoring, data mobilization and analytical methods to provide timely knowledge and advice to decision-makers about the effects of climate on ocean basin conditions and coastal socio-ecological systems. This system will inform decisions on fisheries management, fisheries compliance, food security, ecological restoration, and much more. The NPAFC and PICES submitted a concept proposal for this program known as BECI (Basin-Scale Events to Coastal Impacts) to the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development in early 2021, with the goal of developing a new intelligence system over the period of the Ocean Decade (2021–2030).
In a major effort to fill our gaps in knowledge of the ocean phase of the salmon life cycle, as many as five research vessels will go out to sea in late winter 2022 to conduct the largest ever pan-Pacific, epipelagic ecosystem survey during winter, focused on understanding salmon and their ecosystems. The 2022 Expedition will involve a full ecosystem survey with pelagic trawling and detailed sampling of marine life in the upper ocean and will include research on physical, biological and chemical oceanography. There will also be a gillnet vessel deployed in the Gulf of Alaska, alongside the ships that will be trawling, to test the catch efficiency of different gear types. Novel technologies such as gliders, environmental DNA and genetic stock identification will be used to enhance research efforts. The 2022 Expedition will bring together scientists from Canada, Japan, the Republic of Korea, the Russian Federation, and the United States — the five member countries of the North Pacific Anadromous Fish Commission (NPAFC) — to build on research from the 2019 & 2020 International Gulf of Alaska Expeditions.

  • Generation Ocean starts today!
Join the global movement to grow awareness, build knowledge and drive action to restore, protect and live better with the ocean. Today, we are launching a new global movement to build and strengthen knowledge to take action for the ocean we urgently need to save. Today, we are launching Generation Ocean (GenOcean).
Whether we live inland or by the sea, the ocean is essential to life and livelihoods; it is humanity’s most constant and loyal supporter. Its waters connect us to one another, and its influence on our lives can be felt on a daily basis.
However, due to human activity, the ocean is under stress, and we have reached a decisive moment in our capacity to get it back on track.
Every generation has a part to play.
Whoever you are, wherever you’re from, no matter what age, we are all GenOcean.
    Core principles
    - Mobilising
GenOcean will mobilise people from around the world and from different backgrounds to restore and protect the ocean.
    - Science-based
GenOcean is rooted in knowledge and the scientific research of the UN Ocean Decade (2021-2030), aiming to bring science closer to people.
    - People-led
The campaign will feature stories of people from around the world who are connected to various ocean issues and the ways in which they are using knowledge to take action.
    - Inspiring
Communicating that restoring and protecting the ocean is everyone's responsibility, with people-led stories serving as inspiration for audiences to draw upon and use knowledge to take action.

  • Announcing the DOSI Task Force for the Conservation of Deep-Ocean Biodiversity
We are excited to invite all who are interested to reach out about joining our new Task Force for the Conservation of Deep-Ocean Biodiversity.
The focus of this Task Force is the conservation of biodiversity and identification of nature-based solutions to the biodiversity crisis. DOSI has the expertise to provide deep-sea science that specifically guides conservation decision-making. Our Task Force will seek to proactively address and communicate the science directly relevant to conservation issues, such as that of biodiversity conservation or designing effective MPAs.
Since integrity of biodiversity is a core element of every DOSI Working Group, this Task Force can incorporate knowledge, conservation issues and solutions across Working Groups into broadly applicable actions that can then be modified as needed by individual Working Groups (e.g. design and implementation of protected areas). To achieve integration across Working Groups, the Task Force will also establish a liaison from each Working Group who will maintain a two-way exchange of knowledge and expertise.
Some talking points for the Task Force are:
    - Knowledge is limited but should not limit stewardship
    - The deep sea supports the health of our planet
    - The deep sea is connected to the surface and the coasts
    - The deep sea is being impacted by human activities
    - Spatial protection and management are needed, such as 3D highly-protected large-scale MPAs that are climate smart
    - Capacity transfer is urgently needed to address scientific and policy-related knowledge inequities to achieve global impact and effect transformative change.
Would you like to join the discussion? If so, please contact us here. An update and first steps for the Task Force will be circulated the week of January 31st to those who join.
As always, thank you for your support of deep-sea science and stewardship.
